There is no nice way to put this: this book is absolute crap. Nobody so obnoxious, self-conceited, and uptight should be allowed to write a book about another culture, period. The only thing this woman knows how to do is complain. You'd think she'd been forced to live in Egypt instead of making her own decision to move there. The culture doesn't suit her, the people don't suit her, the living situation doesn't suit her...and she lived in the better parts of Egypt! She is condescending to every single Egyptian she meets, and she thinks it's funny. And on top of that, every man she meets wants to screw her (so she thinks)! There is not a single chapter in which she does not find a way to talk at least once about sex. Anyone buying this under the (false) presumption that they will actually learn about the culture is about to be rudely disappointed by the self-centeredness of the author. We can only hope Ms. Eck doesn't move to a different country and feel compelled to write another book.

The only thing I can say to anyone wanting to visit or live in Egypt is: buy a travel guide and find an Egyptian penpal. DO NOT buy this book - put your money toward your trip instead.

This book provides the opportunity to experience day to day life in another country during a period of great turmoil between cultures. It is through this kind of travel story that we learn and affirm that people are people wherever they are from and that greater understanding on a personal level will build a stronger society. This book is not only about travel from the US and western culture to a mid east country, it is about travel through middle age and a period of self discovery. Sometimes we have to take ourselves outside of our comfortable environment to see ourselves through fresh eyes. We should all have this experience.

This book is written in a easy way to read, entertaining and informative in some parts but the writer was misinformed in some other parts. I am an Egyptian and while was reading some parts I was feeling like she was talking about another country than the one I know. Either she was misinformed as I said or didn't understand some aspects of the culture. Overall, it is a good book. At least she took the time to know another culture. I salute her.

Written with humor, honesty and genuine caring, I am Happier to Know You takes the reader into a rich and varied culture with social and political perspectives so necessary to our understanding of today's world. This story of a lone, American woman as she finds personal strength experiencing a totally new life is insightful and compassionate. I felt as if I were in Egypt. Her sense of humor took her through many trying circumstances, but brought with it acceptance and understanding of a country and a people she truly loves. I am Happier to Know You provides both learning and understanding of Middle Eastern customs through non-judgmental eyes and an inspiring, courageous story of personal growth.

Having just returned from a recent trip to Egypt, I was delighted to find Jeanne Eck's book "I am happier to know you." Jeannie validated so many of my personal perceptions and expanded upon them in her book. She speaks of the people and culture with clarity and realism, lending her insights and experiences to the Western world with compassion and understanding.

Every word brings me back to Egypt, her wonderful culture, history and people. I have been contemplating an extended visit, and her "words of wisdom" prepared me realistically for the value and challenges of such a journey.

Jeanie is a courageous and adventurous woman who "dares" to explore and to share what most of us would never even dream of. Thank you Jeannie Eck, you expanded my world, my insights and my heart.
